SDG #13 – Climate Action
UN Sustainable Development Goal #13 consists of “taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.” Driven by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, climate change presents a massive threat to the sustainability of life on our planet.
Fortunately, many organizations are taking innovative action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. This post highlights eight organizations at the forefront of climate action.
Organizations Innovating for Climate Action
1. This is Zero Hour
Comprised of youth leaders and adult mentors, this “movement family” adamantly believes “that #thisisZeroHour to act on climate change.” Their current initiative, Getting to the Roots of Climate Change, is a grassroots movement to educate communities throughout the United States about key systems of oppression, which Zero Hour has identified as the root causes of climate change. 2. Sunrise Movement
An initiative run by American young people, “Sunrise is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process.” The movement adheres to guiding principles that emphasize inclusivity, innovation, and empowerment. Their primary focus areas are reducing American dependency on fossil fuels and facilitating economic growth by promoting legislation, such as the Green New Deal. Learn how to get involved here.
3. Extinction Rebellion
“Extinction Rebellion is an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience in an attempt to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse.” Organizing “above the ground” civil disobedience, XR uses economic disruption and civil disruption to respectively impact political systems and large-scale raise awareness. 4. Climate Generation
“Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy empowers individuals and their communities to engage in solutions to climate change.” The organization relies on education, collaboration, and partnership strategies to design climate solutions at the community level. One of their most innovative initiatives, Climate Stories helps people understand how climate change is relevant to their lives. Climate Generation provides excellent guidance on several action steps people can take, including teaching climate change.
5. End Climate Silence
Leveraging the power of digital activism and storytelling, “EndClimateSilence.org is a volunteer organization dedicated to helping the media link stories about climate-change impacts to climate change itself.” This organization offers wonderfully simple ways for people to engage in climate activism. You can get involved by following/retweeting @EndClimtSilence, sending them media stories, and starting conversations with friends about climate change.
6. Project Drawdown
This organization is on a mission “to help the world reach “Drawdown”— the point in the future when levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline.” Working to advance business leadership in the area of climate solutions, Project Drawdown has an exceptional solution library that provides climate actions that different economic sectors can take. With sophisticated research and partnership opportunities, Project Drawdown is an ideal resource for business leaders.
7. Our Climate Voices
Simplifying community-based climate action, Our Climate Voices uses storytelling to connect people with grassroots climate solutions. They use an anthology of stories to put the people most impacted by climate change at the center of climate dialogues. 8. Earth Day Network
